So you breath in the suffering of a loved one, then breath out compassion and kindness. You do this with a stranger and then with an enemy, and then with all sentient beings. Over time, metta/tonglen meditation will open your heart and give rise to compassion, metta and the wish for all beings to attain enlightenment. And that’s what’s known as bodhicitta, the “enlightened mind.” Metta meditation is a part of my Sunday practice :-)

Meditation on loving-kindness (variously called “metta” or “tonglen” meditation, depending on school) is a great way to cultivate bodhicitta. It’s the process the Venerable Ribur Rinpoche was talking about. It involves meditating on taking on all the suffering of all the realms onto your self with each in-breath, and then sending out compassion, love and kindness with each out-breath. Oftentimes one will start small – with a loved one, a stranger and then an enemy, and then the entire cosmos.
